Graphic design | art | Britannica

Graphic design, the art and profession of selecting and arranging visual elements—such as typography, images, symbols, and colours—to convey a message to an audience. Sometimes graphic design is called “visual communications,” a term that emphasizes its function of giving form—e.g., the design of a book, advertisement, logo, or Web site—to information. An important part of the designer’s task is to combine visual and verbal elements into an ordered and effective whole. Graphic design is therefore a collaborative discipline: writers produce words and photographers and illustrators create images that the designer incorporates into a complete visual communication.

The evolution of graphic design as a practice and profession has been closely bound to technological innovations, societal needs, and the visual imagination of practitioners. Graphic design has been practiced in various forms throughout history; indeed, strong examples of graphic design date back to manuscripts in ancient China, Egypt, and Greece. As printing

COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN

Girl and cardboard clone

Naomi Mareschal

Bachelor of Architecture

Naomi Mareschal became interested in design at a young age, and under unlikely circumstances. Originally from New Orleans, she became intrigued with architecture after her family’s home flooded from Hurricane Katrina.

“After Hurricane Katrina, I lived in a FEMA trailer on my front yard,” she shared. “Over those two years, I watched my house get rebuilt from the ground up. Having been amidst all the design decisions of the house I now inhabit, I have ever since then been fascinated with all things architecture and its related professions (construction, interior design, etc.)”

“Architecture draws from all of the subjects I’m most interested by: art, science, technology and environmental awareness,” she said. “You have to constantly consider so many factors to be able to successfully design and create architecture, which has been a welcomed challenge.”

Naomi said architecture is the ideal field for her, since she

Design Crush – Art, Design & Inspiration

December 18, 2019

It must have been May or June when Getaway first popped up on my radar. Their tiny cabins nestled in nature were instantly appealing to my boyfriend, Aaron, and I – we’re not very outdoorsy, but loved the idea of getting off the grid for even an evening and were thrilled that dogs are welcome. We’d originally planned for a trip timed to the changing leaves in autumn, but life intervened and we weren’t able to make it happen. Lucky for us, Getaway reached out last month to see if we wanted to try out their Beaver Creek outpost in Ohio that’s only a short 35 minute drive from our house.

Our overnight trip was scheduled for early December, the perfect time to sneak away during the holiday hustle. (Also, part of my plan to not over-stress this month!) In the weeks leading
